This free calculator splits a sick leave into the days paid in full, at half pay and unpaid under Article 31 of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, and prices them on a 30-day month. Enter your monthly wage, the sick days already taken this year and the days of this leave. Everything runs in your browser; nothing you enter is sent anywhere.
The Sick Leave Rules
After probation, a private-sector worker may take up to 90 days of sick leave a year, continuous or intermittent (Article 31(3)). The first 15 days are paid in full, the following 30 days at half pay, and the rest of the 90 days are unpaid.
During probation there is no paid sick leave. The employer may grant unpaid sick leave on a medical report that states the leave is necessary (Article 31(2)).
No wage is due for sick leave when the illness resulted from the worker’s misconduct (Article 31(4)). Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, Article 20, names the cases: an illness caused by alcohol or drugs — proven by a report from the concerned authorities — or by violating safety instructions the worker had been told about and acknowledged.
The worker must tell the employer within 3 working days and submit a medical report from a medical entity (Article 31(1)).
Once the sick leave is finished, if the worker cannot return to work, the employer may end the contract, paying all financial entitlements (Article 31(5)). Article 46 forbids terminating a worker for lack of health fitness before the legally accrued leaves are used.
How Sick Leave Pay Is Calculated
Daily wage = monthly wage ÷ 30. Article 67 makes the month 30 days for every calculation under the law.
Full-pay days × daily wage × 1, plus half-pay days × daily wage × 0.5. Unpaid days add nothing.
Which band a day falls in depends on the sick days already taken that year: days 1–15 of the year are full pay, days 16–45 half pay, days 46–90 unpaid. So the sick days already taken are an input, not a detail.
Each band amount is rounded to fils once, and the total is the sum of the rounded bands, so the figures on screen add up.
Assumptions and Limits
Wage or basic wage: Article 1 defines “Wage” as the basic wage plus cash allowances and benefits allocated under the contract, and “Basic Wage” as the contract wage without allowances. Article 31 speaks of full and half pay and does not say “basic”, while the law does say “basic wage” wherever it means it (overtime, public holidays, leave encashment). This calculator therefore reads sick pay as the wage, basic plus allowances. That is our reading of the English text, not a quoted rule — so the calculator prices whatever monthly figure you enter, and you can enter the basic salary if your employer pays sick leave on basic.
The year: the law allows 90 days “per year” without saying whether that is the calendar year or the service year. Enter the sick days taken in the year your employer counts.
Days past the 90th in a year are outside the sick leave entitlement. The calculator shows them separately and pays nothing for them.
Work injuries and occupational diseases are not sick leave: Article 37 pays the full wage during treatment for up to 6 months, then half wage for up to 6 more. This calculator does not cover them.
Whole days only. The law counts sick leave in days and says nothing about half days.
A contract or company policy may pay more than the law; the figures here are what the law requires.
UAE Sick Leave Pay Examples
Worked examples on a monthly wage of AED 9,000 — a daily wage of 9,000 ÷ 30 = AED 300:
First sick leave of the year, 10 days
10 d × AED 300 × 1
= AED 3,000.00 sick leave pay
20 days, with 10 days already taken this year
5 d × AED 300 × 1 + 15 d × AED 300 × 0.5
= AED 1,500.00 + AED 2,250.00 = AED 3,750.00
60 days, with 40 days already taken this year
5 d × AED 300 × 0.5; 45 days unpaid; 10 days past the 90-day maximum
= AED 750.00 sick leave pay
5 days during probation
5 d × AED 300 × 0
= AED 0.00 — no paid sick leave on probation
Frequently Asked Questions
How many sick leave days do you get in the UAE?
Up to 90 days a year after probation, continuous or intermittent, under Article 31(3) of Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021: the first 15 days at full pay, the next 30 at half pay, and the remaining 45 unpaid.
Is sick leave paid during probation in the UAE?
No. Article 31(2) gives no paid sick leave during the probationary period. The employer may grant unpaid sick leave based on a medical report that states the leave is necessary.
Is UAE sick leave pay calculated on basic or full salary?
The law does not say “basic” for sick leave. Article 1 defines the wage as basic plus cash allowances, and the law says “basic wage” wherever it means basic, so this calculator uses the full wage. It is a reading of the English text, so the calculator uses whatever monthly figure you enter.
How is one day of sick leave pay calculated?
Monthly wage ÷ 30, because Article 67 treats every month as 30 days. A full-pay day is worth that daily wage; a half-pay day is worth half of it.
Can I be dismissed while on sick leave?
Article 31(5) lets the employer end the contract after the sick leave is finished if the worker cannot return to work, with all financial entitlements paid. Article 46 forbids termination for lack of health fitness before the legally accrued leaves have been used.
What if the illness was caused by my own misconduct?
No wage is due for that sick leave (Article 31(4)). Cabinet Resolution No. 1 of 2022, Article 20, covers illness from alcohol or drugs — which needs a report from the concerned authorities — and illness from violating acknowledged safety instructions.
How soon must I tell my employer that I am sick?
Within 3 working days, with a medical report issued by a medical entity (Article 31(1)).
