UAE Visa Cancellation Timeline
Based on Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021 (Articles 9, 13, 43 and 53), Cabinet Resolution No. 97 of 2022 (Articles 9 and 12) and the MOHRE, ICP and GDRFA service pages. Last reviewed: 2026-09-28.
Enter the last day of the contract and the notice that applies. The page lists the steps of cancelling an employment visa in the order they happen, dates the ones the law gives a day count, and quotes the official source of each. It runs in your browser.
The Steps and Their Rules
Notice. Either party ends the contract with written notice of 30 to 90 days, as the contract sets (Federal Decree-Law No. 33 of 2021, Article 43(1)); during probation it is 14 days from the employer, one month from a worker moving to another UAE employer and 14 days from a foreign worker leaving the UAE (Article 9). The contract ends when the notice expires (Article 43(2)).
Final dues. The employer pays the wages and all other entitlements within 14 days of the end of the contract (Article 53). MOHRE’s work-permit cancellation asks for the establishment’s statement that the worker’s dues are fully paid and the worker’s signature acknowledging them; a worker who is abroad, for example, is exempt from signing. MOHRE states a service completion time of 2 working days.
Residence. Only the sponsor can cancel a residence visa; an employer applies to MOHRE to cancel the contract and work permit first, then to ICP (u.ae). GDRFA Dubai lists the MOHRE work-permit cancellation among its requirements for cancelling a residence permit.
After the last day. A worker who lost the job for a reason other than resignation, with at least 12 consecutive months in the unemployment insurance scheme and not dismissed for disciplinary reasons, claims ILOE within 30 days of the end of employment (Cabinet Resolution No. 97 of 2022, Articles 9 and 12). The employer issues a free experience certificate on request (Article 13(11)) and bears the return ticket unless the worker has joined another employer or the contract ended for a reason attributable to the worker (Article 13(12)).
How the Dates Are Counted
From the last day of the contract: the notice is served by the last day minus the notice; final dues by the last day + 14 days; the ILOE claim by the last day + 30 days. These are the dates of the HR Checklists’ offboarding list, computed by the same code.
The work-permit and residence cancellations, the experience certificate and the return ticket have no day count in the texts read, and the grace period differs between the official pages, so none of them is dated.
The Grace Period, and Other Limits
The official pages differ on the grace period. GDRFA Dubai’s residence-cancellation service states: “After the cancellation or expiration of the residence permit, there is a grace period of (60) sixty days during which you may remain in the country.” u.ae states that residents get grace periods “that reach up to 6 months (according to resident category)”. ICP charges AED 50 a day from the day after the grace period for the permit type ends and gives no figure. Check the period for your permit with the authority that issued it.
A mainland private-sector employer and an employment residence visa. The DIFC and the ADGM have their own employment laws; family visas sponsored by the employee must be cancelled before the sponsor’s own (u.ae). Dates are calendar dates: nothing moves for a weekend or a public holiday.
